Past Meetings: January 8, 2004

Date: Thursday, January 8, 2004
Time: 7:00 PM
Location: Kelly Services Headquarters
Attendees: 52

This month marked the start of a new DPUG tradition; an optional pre-meeting dinner at Kerby's Koney Island, across the street from Kelly Services. We had about 20 people join us for dinner, including our family of 6--Grandma joined us so she could take the kids home after dinner while we went to the DPUG meeting. We look forward to making this a regular part of DPUG meetings.

Before we jumped into our topic for the evening, we had a few announcements:

  • Next month's meeting is TBD based on the slim possibility that Scott & Tracy will attend annual PalmSource Developers Conference February 10-12 in San Jose. Update: we're going! So no February meeting.
  • March meeting will have representative from Earthcomber to discuss their Palm-based mobile application.
  • Teleflip.com: free service that allows you to send a message to any cell phone equipped with text messaging, regardless of carrier. Send email to phonenumber@teleflip.com, for example: 2485551212@teleflip.com. Tracy sent a message to various DPUG members who happened to have their mobile number in their address book card they had beamed to Tracy. It works well, except because of the footer teleflip appends to all messages, it forces nearly all messages to be broken into two messages.
  • Tracy is holding an Advanced Palm Workshop Jan. 27 in Bloomfield Hills. Visit www.digitsense.com for more information.
  • Scott and Tracy finally installed AOL Instant Messanger on the kids' computer. Our 13-year-old is now fluent in a whole new language.

Agenda:

The topic this month was "Wireless and the Average Joe", presented by Carl Brooks, Founder of PalmLoyal.com. Carl gave an excellent presentation. I'm just going to let his powerpoing slides speak for themselves.
