Past Meetings: March 13, 2003

At this meeting we dicussed a couple of different topics:

• E-books on your Palm - why lug around books when traveling? Download eBooks and you'll always have reading material with you. Not only can you purchase eBooks from several on-line places, you can also get them from newsgroups like:

  • alt.binaries.e-books
  • alt.binaries.e-books.flood
• Just a personal note--I am now hooked on eBooks. I was always a big reader, but I really like eBooks. I like that with eBooks I always have something with me to read. I just got back from a 10 day trip with my kids, and one of the downers about traveling with kids and staying in a hotel is that everyone has to go to bed when the youngest one goes to bed--no TV, no lights on for reading. Our youngest is 2, so lights out was pretty early. But with eBooks, I was able to read using the Palm's backlight feature. It was fantastic, really kept me sane. I was even reading on I-75 while stuck in a traffic jam. Downside is that I can't read outside very well when wearing my polarized sunglasses....
• HanDBase 3.0 - Don't keep purchasing various software packages for your Palm to track things--HanDBase allows you to create your own databases, or import from Excel or Access databases. Full desktop support. Very powerful tool, a "must have" piece of software in our opinion. We went through how to setup a new database, and some examples like tracking Mileage, Running, Weight, Expenses, DVD's to rent, etc. Another great thing about HanDBase is that there a hundreds of free databases that you can download from their web site at www.ddhsoftware.com/gallery.html. Things like area codes, or the list of this year's Oscar nominees, MLB baseball schedules--all sorts of things.
