This was our last meeting of the year, and a surprisingly well
attended one considering the busy-ness of the season. Several people brought
in cookies and various desserts so we enjoyed treats before, during and after
the meeting. Before we started our agenda topics, we discussed a few administrative
items:
- It has been noted that I haven't done that great of a job recently of updating
the web site with meeting minutes. If anyone wants to volunteer to be our
scribe, that would be much appreciated. It simply means taking notes during
the meeting and emailing them to me. I will take care of posting them to the
web site. If you're interested, please contact us.
- DPUG Co-founder Tracy Dreslinski is holding an Advanced Palm Handheld Computer
Workshop Tuesday, Jan. 27 in Bloomfield Hills. Visit www.digitsense.com
for more information.
- Our next Meeting is Thursday, January 8. Our topic is "Wi-Fi and your
Palm". This topic will be presnted by Carl Brooks, Founder of PalmLoyal.com
Agenda:
DPUG
member Jesse Kincaid reviewed his new Tapwave
Zodiac2 for us. Jesse did a great job of talking about what he liked and
didn't like about the new Tapwave . This is an amzaing device--it looks like
a GameBoy Advance, with a landscape display (although the screen is rotate-able).
This device is actually geared towards gamers. Jesse bought it strictly because
it allowed him to invert the display and let him use this thumb at the top
of the device to scroll pages. This device is only available on the Tapwave
web site and comes in two models:
- The Zodiac is light grey and has 32MB memory and lists for $299
- The Zodiac2 is charcoal grey and has 128 MB memory and lists for $399
It comes with OS 5.2.1; there are dual external speakers and even buttons
on top like a Playstation controller. There is an 8 way joystick on the
left of the screen and a 4-way navigator on the right side of the screen
for easy navigation. There are two SD slots as well as an earphone jack.
Jesse is not a big gamer, but is very happy with his device. It is slimmer
than I expected--I guess I was thinking it would look just like a GameBoy
Advance but it's not as bulky. Only disadvantage is that since it's not
available anywhere except Tapwave's website you have to pay street price.
We
had a rewview of the Hanspring
Treo 600 by a mother/son combination who's name I didn't catch (Sorry!).
These were first time attendees and it was awesome of them to step and talk
about what they liked about this device. This is a combo cell-phone/PDA unit.
It also has a built-in digital camera as well as an SD slot. It has a built-in
keyboard and no Graffiti, but the keys are nicely shaped and easy to press,
even through a plastic phone protector. The phone has a speakerphone which
is a must for heavy PDA users. The only disadvantage is that the color screen
is only 160x160, but perhaps because the display is so small it's not really
too bad in terms of crispness. The Treo 600 lists for $449 but is generally
available for much less than that.
- DPUG co-founder Tracy Dreslinski gave an in-depth look at the handheld expansion
slot, and software and accessories that allow you to get the most out of it.
The PowerPoint presentation is available by clicking
