Past Meetings: November 14, 2002
At first we thought it was going to be a small meeting; just 17 in attendance
when we started at 7:00. By 7:10, twenty more people had made their way in.
Some miscellaneous topics to start with:
- Upcoming meetings
- Troy-based Palm Enterprise Solutions Group for January meeting
- Mike Wendland for February Meeting
- December topics--anyone have any ideas???
- Scott's iTemp application
may be featured as a Palm Success Story on Palm's web site!
- Tracy got a new Palm Training contract with the Michigan Dental Association
Continuing Education Department
Our agenda for this meeting was:
- Our guest speaker was Larry Castle, Store Manager of the Dearborn Franklin
Covey Store.
- An informal review of the Palm Tungsten T as well as the Sony NX70v. Both
are new Palm OS 5.0 devices.
- A swap meet where attendees could sell or trade their handheld accessories
that they no longer need or use.
Meeting Details:
- Larry Castle walked us through the FranklinCovey
PlanPlus for Microsoft® Outlook®. It replaces FranlinCovey
for Outlook. This software - incorporates Franklin principals, which is really
useful for those coming from the paper Franklin Planner system. I could write
all about the great features, but I'd just be repeating what Franklin Covey
already has on their web site, so please visit that for more information.
The software costs $79.95 for the full version; $39.97 for an upgrade from
FranklinCovey for Outlook. If you buy a Palm from Franklin Covey then the
software is just $40/
The other software Larry reviewed was The
FranklinCovey Student Suite. This is a great tool for students--it's
the type of thing I wished I would have had when I was in college. Students
can track things like their class schedule, course work, course notes, grades,
financial aid and school deadlines. The StudentSuite also comes with other
useful software like BDicty dictionary; E-Z convert converter, and file
locator. The Student Suite costs $39 or is $10 w/purchase of any Palm.
- We did a very quick Palm Tungsten T review, as well as Sony NX70V review.
Both of these handhelds run the new Palm OS 5.0. Both have some really great
features, and some distinct differences. The Palm is very small, with a collapsible
case to hide the Graffiti area. There is a new 5-way navigation button in
the center to allow for one handed navigation so that you don't have to slide
open the case for most uses. It comes with a Digital Voice Recorder. Some
software like AvantGo is not yet supported with OS 5.0. There is an enhanced
speaker and the Palm Tungsten T is "MP3 capable" however Palm, unlike
Sony, didn't release a built-in MP3 player. Sony includes a Digital Camera
which can also take video, as well as the Voice Recorder and MP3 Player. The
NX70V is much larger than the Tungsten T though.
- We held an information swap meet where DPUG attendees could unload some
of their no-longer-needed handhelds and handheld accessories. If you have
anything that fits this category, please consider donating these items to
Kensington Community Church, who has been kind enough to allow us to use their
beautiful facility for free. Contact us if you
have any items to donate.
