Past Meetings: May 9, 2002
This was our second meeting at a satellite location. Thanks to Ella Modell
from Lake Orion High School for arranging for us to use their gorgeous facility,
and for making all those great signs that helped DPUG attendees find their way
to the meeting room.
- Our next meeting is June 13, 2002.
This meeting will be back at our normal meeting place, Kensington Community
Church. Our guest speaker next month is Rick Broida, who spoke at our April
2001 meeting and was very entertaining. We've had a lot of requests to get
Rick back, and now we have.
- After our June meeting, we'll be taking the summer off. Our first meeting
of the fall will be September 12.
Meeting Minutes:
This month we reviewed several interesting
software products:
- Ken Morse, CEO of Ilium
Software, and a regular DPUG attendee, reviewed his companies latest product
called ListPro. ListPro
is a very slick list manager. It can be used for a variety of applications:
to do's, shopping lists, packing lists, informational lists, project management
lists. You can customize each list, entering your own columns, and you can
also indent items. ListPro comes with a nice Desktop application which takes
the burden out of creating a list on your Palm. You can download hundreds
of lists from the Ilium Software web site, such as area codes, zip codes,
professional sports schedules, television show plot summaries, and many more.
ListPro retails for $29.95,
- Andrew Hackman and Carl Brooks reviewed some of their favorite Hacks. Hacks
are extensions to the operating system, and typically improve the functionality
of the Palm. There are hundreds of hacks available, and most are free or very
inexpensive. Hacks require a Manager-type utility before they can be run.
X-Master is a good choice, it's free and can be downloaded from PalmGear.com.
Andrew Hackman reviewed EasyLaunch, which is used to launch applications,
applets from Preferences or desk accessories (DAs) and to perform other frequent
actions by simple pen strokes or by a pressing hardware keys. This hack looked
really powerful, and it's free! Andrew also reviewed a cool looking dictionary
hack called Mi:D 1.9. Lousy name, but great hack. Allows you to quickly popup
pertinant info on the bottom of your screen. Very fast. Andrew is a 5th grade
teacher and uses it all the time to quickly look up facts from the encyclopedia.
Carl Brooks reviewed a suite of hacks called Pop Up hacks. These pop-up frequently
used menus and databases, and don't require you to leave current application.
Carl reviewed PopUp Calculator, PopUp Names, PopUp Time, and PopUp Address.
These hacks are $9.95 apiece.
- Carl Brooks discussed a new dictation service called CopyTalk. This service
is perfect for the person on the go, who is perhaps on the road a lot or for
whatever reason unable to enter stuff in their palm but can make a phone call.
CopyTalk is a dictation service--you call them and dictate what you want added
to your Palm "New contact: Doe, John" You rattle off his phone numbers,
etc, and the next time you hotsync, this info will be added to your Palm Address
Book. You can dictate Date Book events, Address Book entries, To Do's Memos,
and e-mails. Emails can be marked for review, meaning you have to review it
before it goes out, or you can just have it mailed immediately. CopyTalk is
staffed by human operators, so the margin of error is low. This really looks
like an incredibly convenient service, especially for people on the go.
Give Aways:
- Everyone in attendance got a very nice leather zipper portfolio, compliments
of CopyTalk.
- 5 copies of ListPro, compliments of Ilium
Software
- 4 copies of DockWarePro, compliments of Ilium
Software
- 3 3-month subscriptions to CopyTalk, compliments of CopyTalk.
- 5 Pop-Up hacks, compliments of Benc Software
