Past Meetings: June 13, 2002

Date: Thursday, June 13, 2002
Time: 7:00 PM
Location: Kensington Community Church
Attendees: 31

We were back home at our normal meeting place after spending our previous two meetings on the road. We scheduled just one topic, guest speaker Rick Broida. Rick spoke at our April 2001 meeting and was very entertaining. We've had a lot of requests to get Rick back, and now we have. We wanted to leave plenty of time for questions, and chit-chat, as well as allow people to get home to catch the Red Wings Stanley Cup Finals game.

Note: This was our last meeting before our summer hiatus; our first meeting of the fall will be September 12.

Meeting Minutes:

Rick is currently doing some Palm Training for Glenco, a division of McGraw-Hill, and also for secondary college instructors. Rick's current PDA of choice is a Sony CLIE n760c and a Kyocera cell phone/Palm unit. Rick spoke of his Favorite Hidden Treasures of Palm World:

  1. Games-Bounceout (like Bejeweled), and Text Twist (like Boggle). Both by Astraware.
  2. PI Backup (pitech.com) allows you backup to removeable media
  3. Freescreenprotectors.com; just like it sounds; they will send you free screen protectors. Use coupon code: freesp to get your free screen protectors. $5.95 shipping & handling.
  4. Stuffback.com - stickers for the back of your Palm in case of loss. You only pay if you lose your Palm and someone calls the toll free number.
  5. Wine Guide by Landware
  6. Graffiti aid-TealEcho hack by TealPoint software. Allows you to really see what strokes you're entering, and see why you're having Graffiti recognition problems.
  7. MiddleCaps Hack; allows you to map the middle section of the Graffiti area to be designated for upper case letters; thereby removing the upstroke requirement.
  8. Keyboard that works w/any model: Pocket Top wireless keyboard via infrared. PDA stand has a mirror that redirects ir port $119.95 w/$20 rebate. Dist. by Micro Innovations (mi-products.com) available @ Comp USA. Web site: www.mi-products.com.

Rick also showed us his Fossil PDA watch w/IR port. He did not have too many nice things to say about it.

Rick also showed us the new Sony CLIE nr70v. It has a built-in keyboard, large hi-res screen that swivels, and a built-in digital camera. The screen twists for traditional style or use as flip top w/built-in keyboard. It has a 66 mhz processor-fastest out there. Built-in MP3 player. Lists for $600. $500 for similar model without the digital camera.

Rick loves to talk about Palms, and can be reached at rick@broida.com.
