Past Meetings: February 8, 2001

Date: Thursday, February 8, 2001
Time: 7:00 PM
Location: Kensington Community Church
Attendees: 35

We had an enjoyable meeting, a big crowd with a nice mix of familiar and new faces. We also had a guest speaker, Ken Morse, CEO of Iliium Software in Ann Arbor, MI.

  1. eWallet
  2. eWallet is a virtual wallet for your Palm OS handheld. Think of all the items you keep in your wallet: credit cards, driver's license, ATM card, insurance card, library card, photos, etc. eWallet is a software application that allows you to securely store all this information on your handheld. eWallet is encrypted and password protected, and it also comes with a desktop application.

Some of the key features that Ken pointed out:

    • Ilium Software started with a Microsoft-based product, and then due to high user demand released a Palm OS version in October 2000.
    • eWallet supports categories. These categories can be public or password protected (different settigngs allowed on a per categoroy basis). Categories might be: address, bank, credit card, internet, heath, memberships, etc. The categories are user definable.
    • You can beam credit card info, etc to another eWallet user.
    • 128 bit encryption is used on both the handheld and desktop, and even during a Hot Sync the data is encrypted
    • There is no Mac version for the desktop yet.
    • The software costs $29.95. This includes both the handheld and desktop version
    • You can go to www.iliumsoft.com to try a free download.

We highly recommend this product. Ken would also like to note that Ilium Software is very customer driven, so if you have any suggestions, comments, or feature requests about eWallet, please email Ken.

  3. Viewing Videos on your Palm

  4. Many people didn't realize that you can put full motion video with sound on your Palm OS handheld. We took a look at two different products that support video on your handheld:
    • TealMovie - made by TealPoint software. This viewer/desktop converter costs $19.95. It comes with a desktop application. TealMovie really compresses the AVI file and therefore uses less amount of memory on your handheld than FireViewer; however FireViewer's video is much crisper.
    • Fireviewer - made by Firepad. This viewer is free. The desktop application called FireConverter, costs $19.99. FireViewer and FirePad do much more than display videos; FireViewer/FireConverter allows the user to display all kinds of rich content on their handheld all with one small application (under 180K). You can view very large scrollable images, stored videos, live streaming video, and text (HTML and PDF).

  5. BugMe!
  6. BugMe! is a great utility that acts like a virtual yellow sticky note on your handheld. It accepts your own handwriting or printing as input, or you can use Graffiti/keyboard input. BugMe! is a great way to capture quick thoughts, phone numbers, etc. when you don't have the time (or need) to create a Memo or DateBook appointment. You can set alarms so that you are bugged in a certain number of minutes (eg bug me in an hour when the time on my parking meter runs out), or you can set the alarm for a specific time (eg bug me at 10:00 to call the doctor's office). You can even set up a note to repeat, just like a Date Book event. You can define how many times you should be bugged when the alarm goes off, and pick your own alarm sounds. All in all, a great utilitiy for the handheld.

Note to Palm IIIc users: if you bought your IIIc recently, you got a bonus application CD which contains a registered version of BugMe!

BugMe! costs $19.95 and is available from bugme.net.

  7. Give Aways

  8. We gave away lots of stuff; nearly everyone in attendance walked out with something. We gave away:

    • A free TRGpro t-shirt to the first 24 attendees
    • 5 copies of eWallet, compliments of Ilium Software
    • Dozens of styluses compliments of Ilium Software
    • 2 copies of TealMovie, compliments of TealPoint Software
    • 2 copies of FireViewer, compliments of Firepad
    • 2 copies of BugMe!, compliments of Electric Pocket
