Past Meetings: December 13, 2001
Some general topics:
- New Ann Arbor PUG www.a2pug.org
- Handspring will be coming out here for our March 14 meeting (finally!)
- Margi Systems donates Presenter-To-Go module to DPUG! Fantastic presentation
tool, and we feel one of the best SpringBoard modules made for Visors.
This module normally sells for $299, and is on sale right now for $199.
- Tracy is teaching "Intro to Palm Handheld" classes for some
local Community Education programs:
- Birmingham Community House Jan. 22 (Intro) and Jan. 23 (Advanced)
- Rochester Community Schools Jan. 29
- Avondale Community Schools Jan. 30
Agenda
- Beginners Tips & Tricks: we looked at hardkey shortcuts, as well
as the Business Card beaming shortcut (Go into Address Book, and make
your own business card. Press Options, and click on "Select Business
Card". Now whenever you want to beam your card to someone, all
you have to do is hold down your Address Book hardkey for 2 seconds
and your card will be selected and beamed. No fumbling around looking
for your card. Works when your Palm is off too. Lots of people in the
room weren't aware of this one.
- How to make mailing labels from your Palm Address Book.
- Go into your Address Book on your Palm Desktop.
- Select all the addresses you want to create mailing labels from.
If you have entries in multiple categories, then go to the "All"
category. Hold down the CTRL key while clicking on multiple names.
- Press and hold your left mouse button down and drag the highlighted
Address Book entries to the MS Word icon on your Palm desktop (for
desktops less than 4.0). For 4.0 desktops, click your right mouse
button and select "Send to MS Word").
- MS Word will open up and prompt you for your "Dragto Action".
You can choose to make mailing labels or print directly to envelopes.
- You'll get the standard MS Word "Mail Merge Helper"
which will walk you through the three steps to do a mail merge.
- Main document: Setup the type of mailing label or envelope size
you are printing to.
- Data Source: Click Edit to define which Palm Address Book fields
you want on the label/envelope. Select First Name, and manually
enter a space. Select Last Name and press ENTER. Select Address
and press ENTER. Select City and manually enter a comma and then
a space. Select State, and manually enter a space. Select Zipcode.
If necessary, press ENTER and select Country. You have now configured
how the label/envelope will be formatted.
- Merge the data with the document: Click Merge and you'll have
a document that you can print labels to.
- Solovision screen protector;
privacy and screen protection in one. We only had five of these to give
away so we haven't tried them out yet. Looking forward to reviews from
the 5 winners.
- Robbie Stark, District Manager for Franklin
Covey, reviewed several Franklin Covey products and accessories.
Franklin Covey has been a Palm OEM since the beginning. Although they
sell handhelds at full retail price, they bundle some great software
for free with every handheld: There are 13 applications w/each Palm,
and several of them incorporate the Roles & Goals that are so fundamental
to the paper planner system. They also have their own Franklin Covey
desktop software. The applications that come bundled with the handheld
are:
- ApttSched
- DRE (daily record)
- File Locator
- KeyInformation
- MTL (Master Task List) for longer term items
- Roles
- Values
- Compass
- E-Z convert
- Ebook Reader including 3 Steven Covey books
They also sell a Student Suite (calculator, dictionary, tracks classes,
assignments, grades). Pricing: $100 for the full suite including the
desktop software. $39 for just the 13 applications.
