Past Meetings: October 12, 2000
After our visit from Palm last month, we wanted to sort of kick back
and just discuss some of our favorite free software available on the Palm,
as well as leave plenty of time for socializing and networking.
For our Beginner/Intermediate discussion, we went through some shortcuts
using Date Book, such as:
- to create a new timed appointment, instead of clicking "New",
enter the starting time in the graffiti area.
- to create a new untimed appointment, instead of clicking "New",
just start entering the appointment description in the graffiti area.
- To edit the time of an existing appointment, instead of clicking on
the description of the appointment and clicking "Detail",
click on the time field of the appointment. This takes you right to
the time window.
- To edit the alarm of an existing appointment, instead of clicking
on the description of the appointment and clicking "Detail",
click on the clock icon on the appointment. This takes you right to
the time window.
- To quickly get to today's date, press the Date Book hardkey
One of the things we like most about the Palm is all the great software
available for it--and a lot of it is free. Our favorite free applications:
- AvantGo:
allows you to download web pages to your Palm. Each time you hot sync,
the web site you specify is downloaded to your Palm. You can select
special pages specifically formatted for the Palm, called AvantGo channels,
or you can enter the URL from your favorite web site. Sign up at www.avantgo.com.
- Mapopolis:
free maps for your Palm. Has every county of every US state. Warning:
Oakland Country is over 800KB! Also includes locations of several chain
restaurants like Taco Bell, Subway, and Burger King to name a few. There
is even a search field to allow you to find a street or restaurant.
Download at www.mapopolis.com.
- BigClock:
a "big clock". Shows current time, can be an alarm clock,
or a timer. You can count up from 0:00:00 or count down from a known
time. Screen is customizable, e.g. you can configure it to be 4 timers
or 2 alarms and 2 timers or whatever you want. Available from PalmGear
by entering "BigClock" in the Search window, or click
here.
- Album
To Go: a mini photo album for our Palm. Allows you to put .JPG images
on your Palm in a slide show. Looks best on a color Palm but still looks
pretty good on the grayscale screens. Never be without pictures of your
kids again! Available from www.albumtogo.com.
And last but not least we enjoyed some giveaways:
- Free demo version on mini-CD of games for the Palm, compliments
of IS Complete, for all attendees.
- Licensed version of irGamePack, compliments of IS
Complete, went to Larry Jackson
- Licensed version of irPrint, compliments of IS
Complete, went to Darcy Erickson
- Pocket Vineyard, compliments of neohand,
went to Rion Nunez and Patrick Reynolds.
