Common epitaph in the Southern United States.

If you understand that, then you probably will be interested in the following:

The Gallery of Art & Design at NC State University announces the inaugural SPoT! – the Southeastern Photography Triennial -- a juried photography exhibition open to artists throughout the Southeast. The exhibition will run August 23 – October 7, 2007, at the Gallery of Art & Design, located in the Talley Student Center on the NC State University campus. Details of the exhibition and entry forms for submissions may be found on the Gallery’s website:

The competition is open to all photographers currently living in the Southeastern United States (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia). Images chosen for inclusion in the exhibition will be published in a catalogue. In addition, the juror will choose several works for special recognition, with a cash award of $3000 going to the image named Best in Show and other cash awards going to second and third place winners. Friends of the Gallery and other sponsoring agencies will be making Purchase Awards in excess of $10,000 from among images included in the show.

Photographers will be chosen for the exhibition by the distinguished American photographer Joyce Tenneson. Ms. Tenneson is world-renowned fine art photographer and portraitist whose work has appeared in over 150 exhibitions and in 10 books, including Intimacy—the Sensual Essence of Flowers, which was published by Barnes & Noble in 2004. Named Photographer of the Year in 1990 by the international organization Women in Photography, Tenneson’s name was also included by a recent poll conducted by American Photo magazine among a list of the ten most influential women photographers in the history of photography. An exhibition of Ms. Tenneson’s work will run at the Gallery of Art & Design concurrently with the SPoT exhibition.

The Southeastern Photography Triennial seeks to recognize outstanding work done by photographers in the Southeastern United States and to enhance the historic photography collection of the Gallery of Art & Design with the work of contemporary artists. The Gallery, NC State University’s art museum, houses one of the largest and strongest collections of photography in the region, with work representing the major figures in the history of photography. The Gallery has special strengths in photographers from North Carolina and the southeast.

Photographers wishing to submit work for consideration in SPoT should prepare a digital file of each image, limit three images per photographer. Images are to be submitted as files on disks, mailed in appropriate packing, to the Gallery of Art and Design by February 1, 2007. The entry fee, to cover administrative costs of the competition, will be $25 per artist. Those whose work will be included in the show will be notified via email by April 1, 2007.

That doesn't seem like a great day to let anyone know they won/were included in anything :)

"Hey Y'all watch this..."

A friend went to school in Spartenberg, where the locals would trudge into the woods and jump off of the high banks of river which ran opaque red from the local soil. He would tell me some great "Hey Y'all watch this..." stories. One involved a partially submerged refrigerator and lost teeth.

The redneck's buddies' rejoinder "He really did it!" is often carved beneath that one.

Thanks for posting this info, Joe--looks to be a very good one.
