We all pick up tips and tricks that help us make better use of Adobe Photoshop. I started this thread so people could share their own tidbits with the rest of the class. While there's no shortage of tutorials and resources on the subject, think of this as our own little PS tips corner on HybridPhoto.

First contribution, here goes:

A remarkable sharpening technique I came across on RetouchPro. You folks should definitely give this a shot. When you've completed editing your image and are ready to apply sharpening, try the following:

1. Merge your finished artwork to a new layer (Mac = cmd+opt+shift+e, PC = ctl+alt+shift+e).

2. In Photoshop, go to Filters-->Other-->Hi Pass. Apply a setting that's just high enough for you to barely make out your image. Remember your setting here, you'll need it for later. Click OK to accept the settings. The resulting image will look horrible, but hang in there.

3. Select the layer to which you've just applied the Hi-Pass. Then go to Filters-->Blur-->Gaussian Blur. Choose a setting that corresponds to about a third of the Hi Pass amount you applied. Click OK to accept then settings.

4. With your Hi-Pass/Blur layer selected in the layers panel, go to the blending modes drop down list at the top of the layers panel and choose "Linear Light" for your blending mode.

5. Your image will be tack sharp! Scale back the layer opacity for the Hi-Pass/Blur layer to reduce the effects to something aesthetically pleasing.

Planet photoshop has a service to email you a photoshop tip everyday. You may not be able to use each tip, but it's worth it just to be amazed at how versatile photoshop is.

It also is a constant reminder of how unintuitive the program is. I am happy that we have an adobe (sort of), but I've been around long enough to have used most of the altenative applications and back in the day llustrator and photoshop were not the easiest, fastest, but every bit as unstable as all those that they outlived or marginalized. Sorry for the rant.
