i have been doing traditional photography for 60 years which means of course that i would be considered "old school". Frankly I am and not don't apolize.

Last night someone showed me some digital photos printed out on what i thought was epsons luster paper of some sort. Nicely printed and presented, however they were all signed in ink. On the front with the signature on the left and dated on the right.

Somehow i missed the message that photos are now signed in ink. when did this begin?

Number (left), "Title" (Centre) and Signed (right) is the traditional order -- in pencil. But since this practice was started only about a hundred years ago it's still fairly new. I believe the result of the gallery system needing to track inventory and a throwback to printmaking where lower numbers would denote earlier, and usually clearer prints, where the plate had not started to lose its impression. Maybe with a print from an Epson a more appropriate tradition would be to print the nozzle check pattern on the bottom as a "Chop Mark" to prove the head was firing properly at the moment the operator clicked the OK button. (Tongue firmly in cheek).

Pencil does not work on inkjet gloss/semi papers.

i am aware of the nomal signing methods, and that one can't use pencil on glossy papers, but what happened to verso?

perhaps i find signing in ink for any reason not acceptable.

I sign my matt inkjet prints in pencil on the lower right and the date and issue number on the right (if I date it). I initial and date the print on verso in the the lower right. Same goes for alt prints and gelatin silver.

For luster surface inkjet prints I use ink. I've not printed on the new baryta inkjet papers but for those I would probably use pencil.

Well if you are printing in ink, doesn't it make sense to sign in ink too? I always suggest using a pen that will use the same inks that the image was printed with.
