why the obvious, and same at APUG, reluctance to post images to the critique gallery? (are you afraid of possible negative reaction?)

why the reluctance to post comments on the critique gallery? (don't you have an opinion?)

so yous don have n pinion

the standard gallery now has more than double the number of uploads as has the critique gallery

i wonder, so why does apug and this site have so much traffic when apparently the work of the members is beyond reproach and nothing more can be learnt, or taught, apparently

Ray,

As no-one else has answered: Some vague thoughts on why I put my snaps in the Standard Gallery:

It isn't because I think that I have little to learn, far from it. I do know, however, when an image is as I wish it to be. If I have questions about how my pictures work on other people, they are likely to be specific questions.

I post my pictures on the web to show something of what I do to people who might be interested - because I like to know what sort of pictures people take; or I post them as practical illustrations of some technical issue.

Web images are not, in general, the finished work. The finished work is a print. (Not an important distinction in most cases, but I thought that I'd mention it)

A critique of an image takes effort - not least to perceive, and then comment in the light of, the photographers intent especially when that intent may be very different from our own. I think that asking someone for a critique is asking for a big favour.

On the other hand, I am very interested to hear negative views on my work, but people are too polite and you don't often get them.

On the other other hand, I get awfully embarassed when people praise my work.

So there's an answer.

Best,
Helen

I used to do the online critique thing at usefilm.com, and eventually I just found that it wasn't an interesting way of discussing work. Most of the comments were of the "good shot" variety or they promoted tedious and usually obvious camera club values--"straighten the horizon," "rule of thirds," "crop a little of the excess foreground," "head higher in the frame," etc. The same is generally true of any online photo critique site that I've seen.

If I'm looking for critique, I find it's more worthwhile to take a workshop or show prints to people I trust and discuss them face-to-face.

You know, I didn't even realize there WAS such a thing until I saw this post. Then I checked the forums list, checked it at APUG, still nothing. And then finally I saw the gallery tab up top.

I'll take a look at other's work, but I don't know how often I would post my own because 1. Subject matter critique I already get at forums that specialize in certain areas (nature photography, nudes, whatever) 2. Technique critique is pretty hard to judge from a scan.

why the obvious, and same at APUG, reluctance to post images to the critique gallery?Hi Ray,

I am gallery saturated - ToyCamera.com, deviantArt, Community Zoe, GarageGlamour, OneModelPlace, Toronto-Photographers, Photo.net, APUG, Flickr, Alternative Photography and the list goes on and on. Not to mention my own website which I haven't updated in 5 years.

That's the reason.

Regards, Art.
