View Full Version : Article & Classified ad system
Hi All, I have installed the software for an article system & classified ads system. It would be great to have some suggestions on categories for each system. Once we iron that out we can launch the new areas. The sidebar is also going to be up and running soon pulling recent data from the gallery, links system, classifieds and articles..
Thanks,
Sean

I think that you should leave it wide open, see what gets written and then it should become obvious what the categories should be. When the list of articles starts to grow that's the time to start sorting.
That sounds like a good idea since content will be thin at first. As for the sidebar it will take some custom coding and the guy I use for such coding is available, might be ready in a few days.

Why bother with the side bar at all? I think it's just a distraction.
My 2 cents,
Don
For those who want to turn off the sidebar you can go to here:

Scroll to the bottom for the setting..

A mention on APUG of a behind-the-scenes discussion about how best to "use" the information contributed by individuals on APUG got me to wondering about the copyright policy re information on APUG and hybridphoto. Do authors of articles contributed here own the articles, or does APUG own the articles?
I remember when the Large Format forum was moving from Greenspun's server to photo.net (a disastrous move, IMO) and the consternation among important contributors when they realized that as far as photo.net was concerned, anything posted to photo.net belonged to photo.net, rather than to the author of the information. Is that the case here as well?
I've clicked on the "Using this area" button for the articles section on both APUG and hybrid, and haven't been able to find any information that would bear on my question. TIA.
Katharine
We'll need to update the terms of service here. It will be the same as APUG:
"After posting your Content to the APUG Services, you continue to retain all ownership rights in such Content, and you continue to have the right to use your Content in any way you choose. By displaying or publishing ("posting") any Content on or through the APUG Services, you hereby grant to APUG.ORG a permanent license to use, modify, publicly perform, publicly display, reproduce, and distribute such Content solely on and through the APUG Services."
This is fairly tame by industry standards. This allows us to edit posts if moderation is needed and it allows us to retain the information permanently. It does not allow us to use the information outside of the sites. There are several reasons for this.. for example on APUG there would be requests from people to delete 1,000's of their posts. We can then deny that because it not only produces large holes of data in the forums but it can be risky on the database to run mass deletions. When you get to a point there are 1,000's of active members you always have those who want to leave and delete all their posts and because it causes so much overhead we try to avoid it by falling back to the site terms..

Sean, where is the terms of service to be found? I've been searching for it with no success.
There's a button titled "Terms of Service" on APUG's home page, but when I clicked on it, it just took me to the support center and asked me to log in, though I was already logged into the site, so I logged in and it gave me a search box, but when I searched "Terms of Service" I got a notice that there was no match.
And I can't get to a home page on hybrid; if I click on "home" it doesn't go anywhere, and if I truncate the URL on the status line to www.hybridphoto.com, it just adds /forums to the end and takes me to the forums page.
Finding the terms of service shouldn't be this hard?

I just looked at a newly posted article and find the sidebar at the right extremely distracting and unattractive. The dark blue and red type in the sidebar clash with the orange, teal and green at the top of the page so strongly as to make me physically queasy. It looks cluttered and, to my eye, trashy.
And ratings for articles? Do we really need ratings for articles any more than we need ratings for gallery uploads? I don't see any way to actually rate an article, so why should we need to emblazon in red the 0.00 rating at the top of the sidebar of each article? I don't see any need for any of the information in red (votes, points, ratings, rankings) if I could vote, I'd say please get rid of all of that. My 2cents, thanks....

I'll look into the functionality. I believe it is working. As for the colours this will be changed.
