I'm excited about joining this site and APUG. I first studied photography in the 70's. Then I was distracted by kids, earning a living, etc. I kept my darkroom and did occasional rolls of family stuff, but wasn't challenging myself at all. Now that I am not parenting on a daily basis and have a bit of actual disposable income I'm back. I joined the local photo club a few years ago, and they have been an inspiration to my creativity. But the club becomes increasingly centered on digital work - as I become drawn to returning to the darkroom. There are things that the digital camera is great for - toddlers for instance - but I feel like I'm really working at and enjoying photography when I'm using film.
I own a Nikon D50, Nikon FE, a beat up Hasselblad, a Crown Graphic 4x5, and a hefty Calumet studio 4x5 that weighs 50 lbs with its case and tripod. The Nikon D50 is the only camera I ever bought new. Recent explorations have seen me plugging away learning lith, and making digital negatives to print cyanotypes and pl/pt. I've learned everything from the internet - mostly alternativephotography.com, but am glad to be branching out into these sites as well. I look forward to learning from others who are bucking the digital only trend. Yours in Development, Sly

Greetings! from a little farther down the Coast. Welcome back to photography. It's a great time to be here. I love "Truck Stop".

Welcome Sly,
It is an exciting time to re-enter the world of photography. There is a lot going on - especially for the open-minded.
I once took an 8x10 camera up to Tofino on Vancouver Island. What a great place to shoot. Always wanted to go back there.
Regards,
Tom

Hi Sly,

Vancouver Island is a beautiful place, especially in the summer. My wife and I have been spending a couple of weeks there in June for the past few years. We stay on Gabriola Island with a friend and take the ferry over to Nanaimo to get on Vancouver Island. This summer we drove up to Tofino and through the Pacific Rim National Park. There is some of the most incredible driftwood on Long Beach, just south of Tofino. And there is a beautiful old growth cedar forest in the park. Just lovely area of the world.

Yup, it's gorgeous here year round. I'm never at a loss for things to photograph, just short on time to do everything I'd like to. Saw a great stump on the beach near Nanoose a few weeks ago, when I just had a small camera with me. I'm determined to get back with my 4x5, but it might be another few weeks. Glad you like our Island. Come back often and spread those tourist dollars around - try the north of the Island - I'll be heading that way at the end of the summer. Sly
