Huum!! Did I describe a print free of its content? If so, that went to far. I merely meant to say that there are several things that make an interesting print, and that surface qualities such as texture and dimensional appearence are important. After that, light itself is next in importance for me.

No dispute, Sandy
I actually think I was agreeing with you

Hi All:
Thanks for the kind words. They mean a lot.
Sandy asked a question that I'd like to answer on the thread that df started about our essential nature.
I really apprecitated what Don said about 'paralysis by analysis'. I think we have enough consensus on an outline to go forward. I'm sure we'll continue to have many discussions about the form and function of the site, and I even look forward to the inevitable speed bumps of disagreement. A good debate always opens my eyes to something I'd never considered before. But... one woman's vote: Let's move to the next stage.
What I don't know, because I have so little experience with forums, is how to go forward. Does jd put it together? I'm all for that. There have been so many good ideas for content and organization.

I agree that we should have enough to go forward. The process is that I make the changes on the back end and hopefully the site does not fall to pieces. This last bit is why I wanted to get closer to a final solution before I started changing things. I’d rather not go through multiple iterations.
I also wanted as many as possible to comment and have their input before I made the changes. As it stands there is still a fair amount of difference between the many suggestions that have been made.
I still don't have the time to make the changes immediately, but I should have the time before the end of the week. I will post the forum structure prior to the changes and I'll continue to monitor this thread until then.
For those who have had their say here thank you and I would really appreciate it if you would visit the gallery thread and give me your feedback.

Kino,
the large catch all bins are an option.
Specific bins with new ones added as requested or needed is another
The large bins don't scale well. At some point we will want to untangle the colour form the black and white, the silver from the inkjets, etc...
We can go overboard with too specific a bin and have few or no posts, by not having a bin available, because it hasn't been requested, may limit discussion.
JD,
Feel free to use what you want, discard the rest.
I'm just happy to be along for the ride...

My apologies if this has already been requested and I managed to miss it: If you go to "Today's posts", you can't get directly to the last post the way you can on the main Forums page. You see the name of the last poster, but the click sends you to the top of the page. This is a very small thing, but if it is easily changed, I so request.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but here goes. I just returned to the site after several months. What I clearly see here is some of the best work going. And I mean that. If it takes a hybrid situation to bring out peoples creativity then so be it. I say bravo-it's the final output that matters. This place needs to exist. After all who knows where our traditional materials will be in 5 years. Again thanks for sharing everyone. I'm a total neophyte in digital and I NEED this place!!!
Best, Peter

I would like to see any and all topics open on this site. Whether the sun is the source light, LED,s, Laser or anything that in the end will create a photographic image.
Times are changing and you have the opportunity not to sink this sites head in the sand but keep its head up and open to new photographic ideas.

After a great weekend of photography, I came back to my computer (and hybrid) to discover no new posts. So, I've realized a very important characteristic of hybrids:
We photograph! (or hike, or party, or nap - as opposed to typing all weekend:)) I knew I loved this crowd. Hope everybody had a great weekend.
Cheers,
Denise

I've just read excellent new posts by Colin Graham and Katherine Thayer. They are commenting and asking questions along the lines I've been puzzling all week. A lot of what is talked about regarding digital negatives has gone right over my head. But, I've been on a quantum learning curve the last month, and might understand a bit more now. I should go back through the threads and try to reread them but the idea is absolutely daunting!
So, to my question/comment: Is there a way we can organize the information that is starting to pile up on hybrid so that newcomers, or those of us in the remedial class, can more easily catch up?
Maybe volunteer 'librarians' for individual topics?

How about a subforum for time lapse? I've been experimenting with this for awhile now and I know there are many experienced people out there doing beautiful things that might fit in well here.

Hybrid - "A thing made by combining two different elements."
To me that covers a mix of digital and analogue, whether it be film and inkjet output, or digital and traditional darkroom output - I class that as being dpug.org.
Currently, I have to do my photography in hybrid mode, although I would prefer not to! I shoot my film and then have to scan and print out (at the lab or on my inkjet printer).
I like the fact that this forum allows me to investigate areas that the APUG doesn't cover - scanning, better digital printing etc. In a nutshell, all the digital stuff I need to know right alongside my beloved analogue approach to personal photography. (My commercial work has to be purely digital, by demand of my clients.)
Both sites *can* exist side by side - photography has embraced the digital age, whilst still remaining traditional. I hope that dpug.org can do the same!! :)
