My brother-in-law is asking me if these are even worth the 100 bucks he can get one for.
It's certainly not something that would catch the interest of most folks here, but has anyone used one?
If so, does it deliver reasonable value for it's cost?

Offhand, it strikes me as sort of like the Epson 4990's and v700's, most everthing thing that's better costs orders of magnitude more.

I had a chance to look around some, I was surprised to find the Epson 4490 is around the same cost, but has 3 times the resolution. Though much depends on how effectively it uses all those pixels, I agree that batch scans on the Epson would likely be better.
HP also has a small unit in the same price neighborhood.

Keep in mind that this product, and the similar "MemorEase" product from Pacific Image are essentially 5 mpix digital cameras (1800 * 1 * 1800 * 1.5 = 4.86 million), so the actual resolving power might be in the range of 1200 to 1400 dpi, due to the Bayer interpolation. Also, given the price point, it is quite likely a small sensor, so noise similar to a compact P&S digicam could be an issue, too.

I think any used Epson, from the 2450 up, might provide a more satisfying user experience, unless your brother-in-law is severely limited by desk space.

no stress ... I'll happen when it happens. I presonally would prefer to wait until you've got clear time to do it right than rush out something which you feel "dang I could have ..." about
