View Full Version : Moderators and Russian Spam

Good Day folks,
The last few days we've received a fair amount of spam form a lone Russian. S/He is trying to get you to click on his/her links so that s/he can infect your machine with a virus. (pardon the gender PCness I'd bet dimes to dollars that it is a he at least marginally so)
It isn't too big a problem except that I am currently tied up with family and vacation so I have asked 3 of our more trusted posters (truth is this site is so good i could make most if not all of you moderators) to be Mod's to help me rein this bozo in whilst I am pretending to have a life.
If and when they accept the offer to be moderators I'll make another announcement. It could be that their term as Mods will be short lived as the site really needs very little moderating or they may stay on as I have a big shooting assignment coming and then a move.
I'll post more as things develop. For the next week I won't be online for more than a few minutes a day mostly in the mornings and evenings (PST).
Thanks a boatload for being such an easy group.

Yeah, noticed that spammer a few days ago.
Just ignored it.

If they are really all from the same source, can't you ban the IP address?

hmm ... looks like some's getting through. Pantyhose plumper indeed
... I did offer to moderate :-)
Ok, for now I have banned all .ru email from being able to register (that was one thing it all had in common). This is quite out of hand, I'll continue to keep an eye on it. If you see any more please report it. Thanks!

What's the best way to report it?
I reported it to a moderator who had an email address. I figure PM's do no good because you'll see the spam as soon as you log on anyway. So, who is best to contact?
Thanks.

Well, I just read in the "Feedback and Discussion" forum about the "Report Post" button, which is situated at the bottom right corner of posts. Those buttons are rather indistinct on a small screen and I had not recognized what they were before. I think they should be made larger or clearer.
Just wondering-are those spammers picking on HybridPhoto or is there a problem with spam protection?

these folks are persistent and now they are using variation on the handles such as "trueladyadmin".
Annoying, but not a problem.

I've been banning them as fast as I can find them, but I am unable at this point to figure out a way to keep them from signing-up. I'll keep trying and I apologize for the annoyance.

When we've gotten very persistent spam attacks on APUG, I've just left the member list open in one browser tab, checking it periodically, and looking into any new memberships that look suspicious, banning them before they can post when it seems like a highly probable match.

Enough to check their IP addresses and e-mail address and to see if they fit the pattern of known spammers, at least once the spam attack is underway.
