Good Day,
Although many of you are familiar with me from APUG and other places I thought it would be appropriate if I gave a somewhat formal introduction.
The Digital…
I have been creating images, of a sort, on computers since the mid ‘80’s. I took the brutal path of the PC in those days. .
Through the years I’ve used all the major platforms and tried my hand at just about every application – illustration, 3D, Animation, video creation and editing and image creation / editing.
I have a different take on the use of digital than many here. I am not as enthusiastic about digital images for the sake of the image. I think it is great that the computer can smooth the bumps of some the more difficult processes and that it is an incredible time saver. For me I think the ultimate power of digital is in the ability to create something that can be seen or made available to almost everyone at little or no cost. I see the digital image as a component of a larger system. A system that allows for the integration of audio as well as visual and adds real interaction. A system that allows for a far more personal discourse between creator and user then any other medium. Digital can destroy physical barriers.
For these reasons I may not be the typical Hybrid member, but I might be a good advocate for the site as a whole.
For me the use of digital to make the image printable or to unburden myself from the constraints of the traditional processes is nice but only a single step in a longer journey. To use digital to accurately or literally depict is sometimes puzzling to me.
It is my opinion that once the image is in digital form there are no rules that say you can’t leave the physical world in the dust.
The Traditional
I have tried to create art from film since I was a preteen and as I got older I continued to try and make art as well as an income.
Professionally I’m an Architectural photographer. I shoot buildings and larger objects, although I’ve shot more than a few products and heads as well. Without exception all of my professional work is delivered to my clients in digital form. All of my work starts out on film.
My professional work is ADD
My personal work is all traditional in that I shoot film and enlarge onto photo paper. Digital doesn’t work well for me in my personal work.
I’m here on hybrid first to grow the community and second to learn.
Cheers,
jdc
