Imacon Precision II SCSI Options

Hello all, I am an infrequent visitor so apologies if this has been covered; a quick search didn't find anything.

I have an Imacon Precision II (SCSI only) which I run using a PC with an Adaptec SCSI card on Windows XP. The PC has become very flaky recently with frequent crashes (no error messages, just random reboots). Unfortunately since the reboots are ten times more frequent when the Imacon is powered up I have to assume that the problem is in the SCSI chain somehow.

So I am forced to contemplate a new machine. I am looking for advice on my options.

Is it still possible to get SCSI cards?

Has anyone successfully run an Imacon Precision II using Windows 7 and a USB <> SCSI adapter?

Any thoughts on what could be causing the crashes?

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

- if you have added some external SCSI devices, the total length of
cable in the chain may be too long
- time for a FULL virus scan

It just looks like your mainboard is toast. You are probably getting a lot of bus/memory errors that you can't see. This is not unusual for a machine about to die.

I know nothing about USB <-> SCSI adapters (or will the driver be still able to see the scanner in case using one) but this can be useful in case you build or purchase a new PC:

As far as I can understand, it's a current "entry level" product. But don't get excited early since I bet the price is not less than USD 200...

I run a PIII on a PowerMac G4 using an Adaptec 2930.

I also have the Ratoc FR1SX scsi>firewire adapter (with optional AC adapter and High-Density 50F to Centronics 50M Adapter) which while it works, for some reason I've never been able to determine, it disables the other firewire ports, which means that my external HDs are not accessible if the scanner is on.

Supposedly the only difference between the PII and the PIII is that the latter came with the scsi>firewire adapter.

I have also used this scanner connected to a laptop PC using an Adaptec SlimSCSI 1480 cardbus adapter.

Assuming there is not some other underlying problem with the computer itself, your choices would be either to replace the scsi card or go with a scsi>firewire adapter.
