New Photography Book

I am pleased to announce the publication of my book: Transition: The American Tobacco Factory.

This book is the culmination of a 6 year project photographing the American Tobacco Factory in downtown Durham NC. The site was abandoned in 1985, and I began my project 15 years later (2000); photographing before and during the renovation of this historic site. This site is the home of the first tobacco factory, and was home to Bull Durham tobacco. The book features 46 black and white plates that represent my favorite images from this photographic project.

I have self-published these books through Blurb.com, a print-on-demand company. The reproduction is very faithful to the actual images.

How have you found Blurb to be with regards to quality and service? I have never used them but looking at them as a possibility for a budget wedding album. Based on theiwr website and my initial playing with their software, they seem great. But I read some reviews dated 2007 that were less than favourable. I wonder if theyhave improved since?

I cannot speak to what improvements they have made since I never used them before. I have also not done any color, just b/w images. I made my own templates in PS and was able to take them into their software using full page bleeds - very easy. Using my own templates allowed me to put in a simple graphic, plate rather than page numbers, and have a sufficient border around the images that set them apart. They are the only print on demand service that has books as large as 13x11. The books are on the expensive side, so you can't make much money on the books; but then many can't afford to spend 40-50,000 to do a press run.

The reproduction is very good (200 lpm). Tonalities are very close to the original. You have to convert images from grayscale to sRGB to upload them, otherwise their software may do strange things to the images.

I would put their printing above that of most commercially printed photo books if you print them on heavy paper they are unparalleled. I used them for one of my books.
I did a couple of books elsewhere. One I have was done by a publisher. Theirs was less costly but is not up to Blurb's print quality although the binding I marginally preferred. The lighter pages it had were easier to turn. That may be a characteristic of my 100 LB paper use at Blurb?
