    Form suggestions

    Sean,

I would like to see you add a Digital Camera Form and a separate Lens Forum as they have on the LF Forum. They are very different subjects and one can be looking for one and not the other. As the system grows to APUG or LF Forum size this separation can be significant.

A camera question that I have been considering is:
Seeking first time digital SLR camera purchase advice. I am primarily an 8x10” and 7x17” film shooter. I would like a digital camera to copy B&W prints up to 20x24 for show entries or posting on APUG, to sell items on eBay, do all the light snap shot and travel documentary work I used to do with a Nikon 8008 without the processing. The camera should take the Nikon lenses from the 8008, specifically: Nikkor AIS 28 mm f 2.8, AF Micro 55 mm f 2.8, AF 35-70mm f 2.8, AF 80-200 mm f 2.8, AF 300 mm f 4.

Used Nikon D 100 and Fuji S2 on eBay have been suggested as well as a new refurbished Nikon D 50 and D 70. Can good condition used or refurbished new ones be found in the $450-$550 range? What advice can you offer? How does one determine how much memory to get? Are there other things I should consider not yet mentioned? Thank you for your advice.

    Thanks,
    John Powers

Just imagine how that post would go down on APUG

Personally I would avoid purchasing anything digital that has been refurbed unless there is an explicit right to return policy and the item is guaranteed like new. I've heard of a lot of people buying refurbed printers and scanners and getting stuck with equipment that doesn't work correctly.

New D50s are fairly inexpensive (about $500) and I would think the D70s might drop in price now that the D80 has been released.

    My 2 cents,

    Workflow

    Hi Sean
I guess what I am asking for is a "total" hybrid workflow forum.
For example, I love B&W and whilst I develop film, I do not have a wet darkroom for printing.
By way of illustration, I could develop a B&W film, say, Ilford Delta 3200 @ 1600, in Perceptol, scan a negative from it on a Coolscan 9000, using Vuescan and print an image on an Epson 2400 using Da Vinci paper. (Clearly, the final result might be open to critical assessment, technically and pictorially) At the moment I can discuss the capture; the scan; and the print: possibly displaying it on the Gallery - but not necessarily as a "flow".
I note that there is a forum/thread for declaring preferences, but unless I have missed it, no forum for discussing how and why one arrives at the final image: which may be a physical or virtual image/print.

As an aside, I very much enjoy APUG except for the absolute hysteria surrounding anything digital, even though to even display images on screen involves an element of digital work. At the extreme for APUG to even have a Gallery is a contradiction in terms!
Forgive the rant but I hope you can see the point I am trying to make. I sincerely hope Hybridphoto can be a broad enough forum to deal with all aspects of imaging: analogue and digital; and irrespective of product loyalties.
    Kind regards
    Ken

I think you'll find Hybrid much more forgiving and I'm hopeful that APUG will be as well -- now that there is Hybrid. A line is drawn on APUG. Some see that as a reason to become over zealous and others can't understand why the line would apply to them -- not a happy mix.

All things considerred, I still think APUG is the best photo forum on the web and I'd be pleased if Hybrid did half as well.

There is no doubt that from time to time we will get dragged into discussions on digital cameras on this site. I have no objection to them because they can always be ignored. I do think there are much better places in cyberspace to have discussions on that topic than a forum dedicated to analog/digital hybrid processes.

    Joe,
Digital cameras are a tool that some people use to manage their hybrid process. I could see a Capture forum that would include film, scanners, DSLRs, D point and shoots, scan backs, etc...
