NEW ENGLAND'S FIRST PHOTO LAB FOR ARCHIVAL DIGITAL BLACK & WHITE PRINTS OPENS IN BELMONT, MASSACHUSETTS.
Belmont, MA (6/2/08) – Digital Silver Imaging LLC, the first New England photo lab to offer archival black & white silver gelatin prints from digital files, is pleased to announce its GRAND OPENING Tuesday June 17, 2008 at 11 Brighton Street, Belmont, MA.
A custom photographic imaging lab, Digital Silver Imaging offers a unique black & white printing process that produces museum-quality, fiber-based and resin-coated silver gelatin prints directly from digital files. The company is the first in New England to do so, combining the advanced Durst Theta 51 photographic laser enlarger with traditional black & white papers and chemistry from Ilford Photo. The lab offers state of the art scanning, professional Photoshop retouching, and archival toning services.
By uniting the innovations of the digital world with the art and archival properties of true black & white printing, DSI creates high quality, continuous tone images that rival – or surpass – prints made from photographic film. Each print is hand-crafted to capture image subtleties, tone gradations, and details – without ink reflections, color variations, unwanted texture, or other challenges of inkjet printing. Furthermore, DSI's archival baryta fiber-based prints have proven longevity that will last for years.
Digital Silver Imaging founder Eric Luden, is a noted commercial and fine art photographer and the former VP of HARMAN Technology, the parent company of Ilford papers. Eric brings decades of photographic experience to DSI, having worked closely with photographers, educators, photo labs, inkjet companies, and photo manufacturers throughout his career. With Eric's knowledge of Ilford and HARMAN papers, digital laser technology, and black & white printing, DSI is positioned to become the premier digital black & white lab for photographers throughout New England and beyond.
Joining Eric at DSI, Production Manager Jay Gaffney brings over twenty years photographic experience to DSI. As an extensively exhibited documentary photographer, Jay has a discerning and meticulous eye for detail. He has honed his craft while staying on the technological forefront of our rapidly changing industry. He is a graduate of New England School of Photography.
Conveniently located near Fresh Pond and Zeff Photo on the Cambridge/Belmont line, the newly renovated studio offers gallery space. Business hours are 9 am to 5:30 PM Monday through Friday, and by appointment.

This is great news, but Elevator has been doing this for some time. They were a test facitlity for Ilford and one of the first of a handfull of labs worldwide to introduce the product.

They mention that they are also making RC prints on the Lambda. Ilford is making a digital fiber paper for Lambda and Lightjet, which Bob Carnie has mentioned using at Elevator. So is Ilford also making an RC version, or is the lab just using normal RC paper, which it might be able to, because RC papers tend to be faster than FB papers?

This is great news, the more labs doing so will help keep the emulsions going.
We first started doing this process on Lambda in 2002, at that time we were using Agfa Classic and when Agfa went under we were very pleased to see Harmon see a niche in their product line and introduce this unique and wonderful product.
I wish these folks all the best. Dalmation Labs in the US is also working with this product using a theta machine.
Duggal in NYC is starting to test this product as well.
