Is Barry Thornton's book a good introduction into hybrid technique for an absolute beginner? Or would you suggest something better?

This was one of his last books, and the information is useful, but not really all that complete given the changes in software and hardware over the last five years. I would not say that it is useful in illuminating so-called hybrid techniques either. Just more of a basic intro to the digital world written by someone who was also just beginning the transition to a digital workflow. It would be a decent free book.
